The Formation of the Museum Society
CMS formed in 1977 when three independent groups came together. They were :-
The Local History Group - The Archaeology Team - The Watermill Restoration Team
The Local History Group.
The Group formed as a result of local interest in history and a series of evening courses run for the WEA by Roy Armstrong - Founder of the Weald and Downland Museum.
Although the group was interested in Crawley’s past from the Bronze Age to the present, much interest was shown, initially, in the houses and buildings in and around the High Street.
The central building shown on the right is known as Crawley Hall which was originally just off Crawley High Street - (between The Tree House and the Post Office) - but is now cared for in the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.
