Although many artifacts had been unearthed previously in Crawley, renewed interest in the subject came when ancient iron workings were discovered during the preparation of the groundwork for the Broadfield area of the town. Iron was being manufactured in Crawley at the time of the Roman conquest and was in fact encouraged by the Romans.
The photo on the right shows the remains of a furnace which now resides in the Science Museum London/Swindon.
As work progressed the findings were stored in a Broadfield School (Broadfield North) which had been finished some months before pupils were enrolled. This school is now known as Seymour School.
