About Us

The Society dates back to 1977 when a number of groups came together to set up the watermill at Ifield as a 'living museum' so that it could house the archaeological finds from Broadfield and Southgate and the researches of the Crawley Local History Group. Since then the Society has developed and now holds thousands of artefacts, documents, photographs and archaeological items testifying to Crawley's history.

The Museum Society aims to present both permanent and special exhibitions in a modern and attractive way. We make use of both our own collections and short term loans from other museums and private individuals. We have an established research programme which informs our outreach services to schools, community groups and our traveling exhibitions to community venues. We have regular talks and walks for our members and the general public on a monthly basis which keeps people informed and adds to our information about Crawley and surrounding areas.

We are in regular contact with the regional museum network which provides support and training for our dedicated volunteers in all aspects of museum work. We are always looking for volunteers to assist with stewarding and conservation.

The Watermill has regular Working Parties on Sunday mornings from 09.00 to 12.00, under the direction of Ted Henbery, MBE. New members with practical skills are always very welcome.
